On the Road

I’d grown up on family vacations to Six Flags and the World of Coca-Cola. The Atlanta of my youth was satisfying to be sure, but I wanted to rediscover it with grown-up tastes.

Back to Nature

There’s only one road to Edisto Beach, and on the way, in the shade of oak tree limbs, is the tidy U.S. Post Office in Adams Run, the one with the hand-painted signage.

Bright Prospect

Walter Taylor is asking me if I’ve seen the movie Braveheart. I’m nodding yes, of course, but this isn’t the topic of conversation I’d expected on my trip to Franklin.

Tryon

Admitting you’ve never cheered for a favorite during the races at the Blockhouse Steeplechase is a faux pas on par with disclosing you’ve never polished off a plate of pulled pork at Tryon’s Blue Ridg

Charlotte

Bank of America Stadium looms up from the landscape, just to the right of the neon JFG billboard, its architectural wave distracting my gaze momentarily from the highway.

Camden

Wispy-slender jockeys sitting high in saddles wear jerseys of purple and cream, or pink polka dots, or stripes of aqua and teal.

Augusta, GA

We grew up with the world stopping in Augusta the week of Masters.
