Downtown Greenville: Clear sky, mist, 35.6 °F
Quick Bites: Garden Delight
Near the intersection of Pelham and Batesville Roads and the banks of Rocky Creek stands a Civil War–era stone and brick building. Most recently a bakery, the venerable structure is now home to longtime Greenville restaurateur Addy Sulley’s newest venture: the Hans & Franz Biergarten, created by the owner of downtown Greenville’s Addy’s Dutch Café and Restaurant.
Over the course of more than a year, the interior of this age-old location has been transformed into an intimate eatery and bar. The exposed brick and stone walls have been preserved, and the bar itself was constructed from century-old trees selected by Addy himself. (Many of the items adorning the walls actually came from his home.) In true biergarten style, there is ample outdoor seating, featuring picnic tables, a pergola, and Palmetto trees.
Hans & Franz Biergarten first opened its doors in March with a sampler menu featuring authentic German dishes, traditional bar fare, and a variety of European brews. It was clear that Greenvillians were ready to experience the biergarten atmosphere—a single invite posted on Facebook resulted in a standing room-only crowd on a Saturday night, says Addy. He adds that his goal is “Southern hospitality with German flair.”
Hans & Franz’s menu offers a broad choice: from the traditional German frikandelle, a savory meatball served on a pretzel roll (baked by the local Bavarian Pretzel Factory), to scallop sliders with wasabi mayo, to ribeye steak. In addition, the impressive beer selection boasts a variety of German and other European beers, including Konig, Bavaria, Weihenstephan, Stella Artois, and Warsteiner, just to name a few.
It seems that Addy has succeeded in capturing the friendly feel of a local pub that will no doubt be a favorite spot for both natives and transplants.
